Upstairs, downstairs and all over the country, the television drama 'Downton Abbey' has attracted millions of viewers - this tour takes you to its home at Highclere Castle. You'll also enjoy 3 nights in a country hotel, easy access to local market towns and charming scenery, and a horse drawn barge trip along the Kennet & Avon Canal.
Day 1. Travel to Berkshire for a 3 night stay at the Elcot Park Hotel, near Newbury.
Day 2. What better way to see the shires than on a horsedrawn canal cruise. Drift peacefully through the countryside on the Kennet and Avon Canal built in the 18th Century to transport goods from Bristol to London. This afternoon you could visit the popular market towns of Marlborough or Newbury, or Basingstoke where you'll find Milestones, the award-winning living history museum where costumed actors and impressive exhibits detail British life from 1810-1950. Alternatively enjoy free time back at your hotel, with its leisure facilities, outdoor chess and croquet - all in a lovely country setting.
Day 3. Highclere Castle is the setting for the hugely popular period drama 'Downton Abbey' – a tale of scandal, intrigue and romance in an Edwardian country house. Tour the elegant castle interior before a stroll through the gardens designed by Capability Brown. Don't miss the highly acclaimed Egyptology Exhibition.
Day 4. Time to head for home.
